Cornmeal Pizza Crust Recipe

Try something a little different with your next homemade pizza.  Incorporate cornmeal into the dough and come up with a more "rustic" crust.

1 cup all purpose white flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup warm water
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
Olive Oil
Garlic Powder

Step #1:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.  Stir with a wooden spoon to mix them all together well.  Stir in 1 cup warm water, (not too hot, only about 100 to 110 degrees F).  This should form a thick dough.   Cover mixing bowl using a clean towel and set aside.  Allow cornmeal pizza dough to rise for about 30 minutes in a warm place, such as on the top of the oven.

Step #2:

The next step is to roll and shape the dough into a crust.  Turn the dough out onto a clean, flat area with some flour to porevent sticking.  Knead the dough by hand several times, about 10 to 15, and then shape dough by hand into a circular  shape.  Use a rolling pin to continue flattening the dough until it is thin, about 1/2 inch, and round.  Sprinkle a little additional corn meal onto a nonstick pizza pan and then transfer the dough onto the pan.  Using a pastry brush with soft bristles, paint olive oil onto the crust.  Sprinkle the top of the crust with garlic powder.

Step #3:

Finally, add sauce, toppings, and cheese and bake in the 375 degree F oven for about 20 minutes.  This crust will turn golden brown when ready and the cheese on the pizza will be fully melted and bubbly.  Remove from the hot oven and let pizza rest for about five minutes before slicing and serving.
